This was excellent Mike, thank you. I love the visual it brings to mind of surrounding ourselves with every project management tool imaginable to the point that we’ve six sigma’d, 5 S’d, and Kaizened our way into a nervous breakdown.

It’s easy to look at a tool as a quick fix. Or seek solace in a new method or hack. I think it comes down to the fact that we often know what we need to do, we just don’t want to do it. So we look for the shortcuts. Because we don’t care enough to put in the effort that we know will lead to success.

But these shortcuts aren’t solutions. And if we don’t care enough to drive the effort, then the best tools in the world won’t make a difference.

Conversely, people who truly care about their work always seem to find a way to be successful, with or without all of these tools. It’s this group that somehow manages to find the energy and stamina to push through the obstacles when things get difficult. With or without a Gantt chart to guide them.

Thanks again.
