We Can’t Go Back to How Things Were
“No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it,” said Albert Einstein. Yet this is how most companies are approaching The Great Resignation. As workers leave in unprecedented numbers, companies are responding with the same strategies that created the situation.
In response to increased attrition, they’re responding with exit interviews and increased recruiting. Neither of which addresses the underlying problems with most workplaces.
For one, what attracts someone to a new job isn’t the same as what keeps them in their existing one. While someone may take a new position with a higher salary or better benefits, salary and benefits aren’t what drive most people to update their resume and start interviewing.
Looking for a new job is awful. Sane people wouldn’t subject themselves to sending their resume into a black hole and dealing with fickle hiring managers unless it’s better than the alternative of staying where they are. They don’t feel appreciated or don’t see a future where they’ll continue to grow and advance. They don’t believe in the mission. They don’t feel a connection to their manager and coworkers.
