Thanks for the thoughts Heather. I agree with you that management needs to start taking more aggressive steps to push down authority. I think the biggest obstacle to this path is the culture that many companies have set up. Too many companies still punish struggles instead of first seeking to learn from them. Perhaps in more subtle ways, but employees and managers are working under a stigma of potential failure.

In that culture, managers respond by being overly involved to limit their risk. They will sacrifice tomorrow’s innovation for today’s acceptability. Which in turn just makes us all mediocre.

I don’t see this changing until more companies take steps to eliminate any semblance of negative reinforcement that surrounds employee mistakes. Then managers will feel less responsible for having a hand in everyone’s daily tasks.
