I agree that too often we push people into management who just aren’t suited for it. They’re cut out to be technical managers, but not leaders. And few employees go to work hoping to just be managed.
The other aspect of poor management that’s occasionally overlooked is the culture that’s set from the top. It’s easy to look down on the micro-manager who’s too involved in his team’s issues. But his management is often demanding that behavior from him. If we’re creating a high level culture that punishes failure, we’re forcing management to be overly involved. And we’re limiting growth. And we’re creating those bosses we don’t want to be.
