When I first became a manager, I tried to be everyone’s friend. I wanted everyone to like me. I wanted people to look forward to their time at work. I wanted to be the cool boss.

It worked, at least at first. We got together outside of work. We joked around and generally had a lot of fun in the office. It was great. Until it wasn’t.
